The Story of the South African Flemmers - Sophie Wilhelmine

SOPHIE WILHELMINE FLEMMER 1856 – 1862

Sophie was the ninth and last child born to Christian August and Betty Flemmer, and the second born in Cradock. She arrived on the 13th December 1856 and was baptized at Cradock on the 25th January 1857.

I have a record that she ‘died young’ and found her death recorded on a gravestone at the Cradock Municipal Cemetery. Sophie’s name is shown on the memorial stone of two of her cousins Betty Christiane and Dagmar Naested who had died young as infants.

Sophie died on the 20th July 1862 aged five, almost certainly in one of the regular epidemics of typhoid or similar diseases that carried off so many children in frontier towns in this time.
