History of SA Flemmers Part I

In conjunction with the Millennium Meeting, Steve Herbert also produced the first volume of the Flemmer Family History covering the period from 1703 to 1870 that is up to the time the family settled in South Africa.

The Story of the South African Flemmers

Steve Herbert and Fay Lea spent over ten years assembling the material for this book which was published in 2006 in a limited edition. It tells the story of the family who settled in South Africa and many of their descendants.

Steve has agreed to the book being published on the Internet whilst retaining copyright and asserting his ownership of this valuable intellectual property. He is also considering making a version available on CD-ROM at a reasonable charge - if you'd like to contact him to order a copy mail Steve.

The amount of work he and Fay Lea have put in to their research is reflected in the fascinating detail of this publication.

The Little Dane

The Little Dane was written before 1937 by Anna Louise Rous (born Flemmer) 1874 -1941. Although it cannot be called an accurate history it is a fascinating collection of stories about her family and about our ancestors from the time of their arrival in 1853.

We can be thankful that the original manuscript was transcribed in 1973 by Joan Geyser (born Flemmer 1929). This made it available to the many members of the family who have taken an interest in the family history over the years.

Reminiscences of Cradock

There are two documents in this publication. Both are from the Corey Library and both are attributed to Eliza Butler.

The background to the documents is not entirely clear although both appear to be verbatim recording of oral history at a time before this was made simple by the advent of the tape recorder.

The originals are hand-written and were transcribed by Steve Herbert and Fay Lea. As far as possible they are verbatim.

Millennium Meeting Paper

The first Family Reunion was held over Easter 2000 and termed the Millennium Meeting. It was really a trial run for the 150 Reunion. Steve Herbert and Fay Lea put in a good deal of hard work to make it a real success.

The report back of the reunion and the page of pictures can be accessed by clicking on this Millennium Meeting link.

Steve Herbert presented a brief paper covering the history of the family and this paper can be accessed - see

Who's Who in the Flemmer Family

Anyone dealing with genealogy is able to establish the facts of their ancestors' existence through birth and baptism certificates, marriage certificates, perhaps title deeds to show where they lived, or school and alumnus records to show where they were educated. Government archives are sometimes accessible to show the career paths of employees and, of course, there is the finality of the death certificate.

One of the frustrating issues that they have is to try and put flesh on the bones of the ancestors they are researching. If they are lucky there may be a hoard of letters, perhaps a diary, sometimes photographs or portraits.

With the future researchers in mind, the thought occurred to Steve Herbert that it would be a good idea to ask current family members to jot down some personal details of their lives as part of the 150 Year Reunion. There was a wonderful response and their stories are here for all to read.

Finally, for anyone interested in Genealogy and South African families in particular, Francois Greef has drawn up an index which may be useful.
