Anthea (Woolridge) Herbert married Terry Herbert in Durban in 1967.
Her brother Graham Woolridge has started to research his family's history and what follows is based on the first report from the investigator. This page will be expanded as more information comes to light.
William Woolridge, aged 25 years and Mary (Jones) Woolridge, aged 23 years arrived at Durban, Natal on 18 September 1864 with William Henry Woolridge, aged 1 year. The ship that brought them to Natal was the "Eudora". Edward Tyrell, a sugar planter at Springfield, Natal, stood surety for their passage.
Mary (Jones) Woolridge was born in Aveton Gifford, Devon, England, the daughter of Richard and Mrs Lidstone. The maiden surname of Mrs Lidstone was Jones. She had married William Woolridge in Plymouth, Devon, England. She died at her residence on Erf 15, Block B, Victoria Village, Tongaat, on 27 May 1914 aged 73 years 9 months. William Woolridge died intestate on 17 May 1894 aged approximately 55 years. At the time of his death, he was a farrier, ordinarily resident at Tongaat, County of Victoria, Colony of Natal.
From the Minutes of the meeting to elect an executor for his estate (dated 30 May 1895) the following next of kin were present, or represented:
Mary (Jones) Woolridge, his widow, and his six surviving children:
William Henry Woolridge (he was appointed executor of his father's estate),
Harriett Ann Rogers (born Woolridge) married to Robert Rogers,
George Hamley Woolridge,
Ernest Edward Lidgate Woolridge.
Charles Richard Woolridge,
Edward Alfred Woolridge.
(Charles and Edward were in the Transvaal at the time of the meeting).
Charles Richard Woolridge was born at Umgeni, near Durban in about January 1868. He was the son of William and Mary (Jones) Woolridge. He was a storekeeper, ordinarily resident at Melmoth, in the Ntonjaneni district of Zululand. He was married to Ethel (Cromar) Woolridge the marriage having taken place in Pietermaritzburg. She was born in London on 22 October 1879, the daughter of Harry and Emily Cromar. (Emily Cromar was later to marry a Mr Barber).
Charles Richard Woolridge died at his home in Melmoth on 22 June 1931 aged 63 years 5 months. The last will and testament of Charles Richard Woolridge, of Umhlali, County of Victoria, Colony of Natal, Hotelkeeper, and Ethel (Cromar) Woolridge was dated at Durban on 3 July 1906.
Ethel (Cromar) Woolridge died at the Hill Crest Hospital on 18 December 1968. After her husband's death, she drew another will in Durban on 6 June 1962 wherein she makes a bequest to her sister Jessie Stoneleigh (born Cromar). [This person is believed to be the Jessie Stonely who was married to Thomas James Stonely who died in 1932.]There is no mention of George Hamley Woolridge in the death notice, or the Liquidation and Distribution Account, so it is assumed that he had pre-deceased his mother.
The children of Charles Richard Woolridge and Ethel (Cromar) Woolridge were:
§ Elsie Kate (Woolridge) Stretch
§ Doris Mary (Woolridge) Padoa
§ Percy Charles Woolridge.
Percy Charles Woolridge predeceased his mother, leaving the following issue:
§ Graham Athlone Woolridge
§ Anthea Ruth Woolridge.
